Interstate Highways in North Carolina

 

The shields of North Carolina's primary and auxiliary Interstate highways.

There are eleven primary Interstate highways and seventeen auxiliary Interstate highways in North Carolina.

Interstate 20 (I-20) - Runs from the South Carolina state line south of Fair Bluff, NC to I-97 in Leland.

Interstate 26 (I-26) - Runs from the Tennessee state line near Faust, NC to the South Carolina state line near Landrum, SC.

Interstate 40 (I-40) - Runs from the Tennessee state line in Haywood County, NC to I-97 in Wilmington.

Interstate 62 (I-62) - Runs from the Tennessee state line west of Sugar Grove, NC to the Virginia state line south of Independence, VA.

Interstate 73 (I-73) - Runs from the Virginia state line near Price, NC to the South Carolina state line near Gibson, NC.

Interstate 74 (I-74) - Runs from the Virginia state line near Mount Airy, NC to I-97 in Supply.

Interstate 77 (I-77) - Runs from the Virginia state line near Mount Airy, NC to the South Carolina state line near Fort Mill, SC.

Interstate 85 (I-85) - Runs from the South Carolina state line near Blacksburg, SC to the Virginia state line north of Bullock, NC.

Interstate 87 (I-87) - Runs from I-440 and US 64 in Raleigh to the Virginia state line northeast of Reynoldson, NC.

Interstate 95 (I-95) - Runs from the South Carolina state line south of Rowland, NC to the Virginia state line near Pleasant Hill, NC.

Interstate 97 (I-97) - Runs from the Virginia state line north of South Mills, NC to the South Carolina state line at Carolina Shores, NC.

Interstate 240 (I-240) - Runs from I-26/40 and US 74 in Asheville to I-40 and US 74A in Asheville.

Interstate 273 (I-273) - Runs from I-73 near Level Cross to I-73 northeast of Stokesdale, running west of I-73 as a bypass.

Interstate 274 (I-274) - Runs from US 158 in Winston-Salem to I-74/285 and US 52 in Winston-Salem.

Interstate 277 (I-277) - Runs from I-77 and US 21/74 in Charlotte to I-77, US 21 and North Carolina Highway 16 in Charlotte.

Interstate 285 (I-285) - Runs from I-85 and US 29/52/70 in Lexington to I-40, US 52 and North Carolina Highway 8 in Winston-Salem.

Interstate 295 (I-295) - Currently runs from US 401 in Fayetteville to I-95 and US 13 in Eastover. Planned to be extended to I-95 near Parkton.

Interstate 385 (I-385) - Runs from I-85 in Oxford to the Virginia state line near Bracey, VA.

Interstate 440 (I-440) - Runs from I-40 and US 1/64 in Raleigh to I-40/87 and US 64 in Raleigh.

Interstate 485 (I-485) - A loop around Charlotte, NC.

Interstate 540 (I-540) - Runs from I-40 and North Carolina Highway 540 near Durham to I-40/885 nearby the Research Triangle Park.

Interstate 587 (I-587) - Runs from I-95/795 and US 264 in Wilson to I-87 (currently US 64) in Zebulon.

Interstate 685 (I-685) - Runs from I-85 and US 421 near Greensboro to I-95 near Dunn.

Interstate 697 (I-697) - Runs from I-97 near Winnabow to I-97 in Kirkland. Serves as an outer bypass of I-97 in Wilmington.

Interstate 785 (I-785) - Runs from I-40/85 in Greensboro to the Virginia state line south of Danville, VA.

Interstate 795 (I-795) - Runs from US 70 in Goldsboro to I-40 near Faison.

Interstate 840 (I-840) - The northern half of the Greensboro Urban Loop, runs from I-40/73 and US 421 in Greensboro to I-40/85/785 in Greensboro.

Interstate 885 (I-885) - Runs from I-40 in the Research Triangle Park to I-85 in Durham.

As of 2021, North Carolina is currently proposing an Interstate 197 (I-197) to run from I-97 to Morehead City, but is pending federal approval. As such, no shield for I-197 in North Carolina is shown in the shield diagram above.
