The 55-State Union Series Sports Almanac - Arena Football League - Overview and Clubs

The Arena Football League (AFL) is the highest level of professional indoor American gridiron football in the United States. It is the second-longest running professional gridiron football league in the United States after the NFL, and it was founded in 1987 by Jim Foster, a former NFL executive who had patented the sport (which is faster-paced and is higher-scoring). There are currently 34 teams in the league, which is divided into the American Conference and the National Conference (each of which have a Northern and Southern Division). Each team plays 18 games in the regular season, and the ArenaBowl is the championship game at the end of the season following the playoffs, with the winning team receiving the Foster Trophy.
