The 55-State Union Series Sports Almanac - Major League Soccer - Overview and Clubs

Major League Soccer (MLS) is the most recent in a series of men's premier professional national soccer leagues established in the United States and Canada, and represents the highest level of men's professional soccer in both countries. Founded in 1993 as part of a successful bid by the United States to host the 1994 FIFA World Cup, the league's first season was in 1996 and has so far managed to capitalize on growing American interest in the sport of soccer (particularly with millennials and Zoomers). With developments such as the proliferation of soccer-specific stadiums, implementation of the Designated Player Rule (which allows MLS clubs to sign star players) and national TV contracts, MLS is America's fastest growing league and their future is bright. There are currently thirty-three U.S.-based teams and three Canadian-based teams in MLS, and each team plays 36 matches in the regular season. The MLS Cup is the championship format at the end of each season, and the league playoff champions receive the Philip F. Anschutz Trophy. While nowhere near as established as other soccer organizations around the world, MLS has made great strides to prove that soccer is more than just fast kicking, low scoring and ties.
