The 55-State Union Series Sports Almanac - National Basketball Association - Overview and Clubs

The National Basketball Association (NBA) is the highest level of men's professional basketball in the world. Founded in 1946, basketball was invented in the late 19th-century and the first professional basketball leagues started in the 1920s. There are currently 36 teams spread across two conferences - each are divided into three divisions. Each team plays 82 games in a regular season, and the NBA Finals is the championship round at the end of the season, with its winners receiving the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy. The NBA finds its biggest audiences in America's largest cities (i.e. New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston), although the rise of the Chicago Bulls dynasty of the 1990s and the Memphis Grizzlies dynasty of the mid-2000s and the 2010s has skyrocketed basketball's popularity throughout the South. College basketball has always been popular in California and North Carolina.
