The 55-State Union Series Sports Almanac - National Football League - Overview and Clubs

The National Football League (NFL) is the highest professional level of American gridiron football in the world. The NFL was founded in 1920, although the roots of football go back to the mid 19th-century as an evolution of soccer and rugby and was played by collegiate teams. Football is the most popular sport in the United States, especially in Texas, Oklahoma and the South. There are currently 40 teams, who play in the American and National Football Conferences, each of which are broken down into four divisions: East, North, South & West. Each team plays 20 games in a regular season, and the Super Bowl is the championship game at the end of the season, with its winners receiving the Vince Lombardi Trophy (named after Vince Lombardi (1913-1970, famed Green Bay Packers head coach and general manager). The Super Bowl originated in the mid-1950s to determine the champion between the two best teams in the league, and has since become one of America's most celebrated events.
