The U.S. state of Mallettbarr is divided into 91 counties, which serve a population of 1,229,825 as of the 2020 census.  The average county population according to the 2020 U.S. census for Mallettbarr was measured at 13,514. The most populous county in Mallettbarr is Whittaker County at 370,548 inhabitants, while the least populous county is Caulfield County at 2,235 inhabitants. There were 90 counties in Mallettbarr when statehood was granted on September 9, 1938. The only county to have been formed since was Ng County from Jilkminggan County in 1961. Mallettbarr's counties were created gradually based on territorial jurisdictions that were in place from when it was a Crown Dependency of the United Kingdom from 1733 to 1926 and were predominately settled by British colonists and Australian settlers with substantial migration from the Appalachian region of the United States. As such, most of the counties are named for British, Australian and American settlers, politicians, war heroes and other important figureheads. All counties are home-rule jurisdictions, though Mallettbarr's state constitution did not grant counties home-rule status to deal with local issues until 1968. County government in Mallettbarr is divided into two bodies: a county council and a commissioners court. Mallettbarr is one of two states that allow for a sole commissioner county government, the other is Georgia. Currently, 53 of the state's 91 counties operate under a sole commissioner county government. Melvinsboro, the state capital of Mallettbarr, is located in Whittaker County and is one of two state capitals that are not also the county seat of their respective county (the other state capital with this distinction is Lansing, Michigan). According to the Mallettbarr state constitution, a new county must have at least 1,000 inhabitants and a land area of 350 square miles with majority voter approval of the proposed county and the existing county (or counties).
