Governors of Puerto Rico
The governor of Puerto Rico is the head of government of the U.S. state of Puerto Rico, the head of the executive branch of Puerto Rico's state government and the commander-in-chief of the Puerto Rico National Guard and the Puerto Rico State Guard. The governor of Puerto Rico has a duty to enforce state laws and the power to either approve or veto bills passed by the Puerto Rico State Legislature, to convene the Legislature and grant pardons, except in case of impeachment or treason. Governors of Puerto Rico serve a maximum of two terms, which are four years each. Puerto Rico has, since being annexed by the United States in 1898, had 4 military governors, 23 governors since the passage of the Foraker Act of 1900, 7 territorial governors, and has had 6 state governors since being admitted to the Union on February 17, 1999 as the 54th state. The current governor of Puerto Rico is Pedro R. Pierluisi, who was inaugurated on January 2, 2021.
