A Basic Guide to Sports in Zeconnemeleth

While there are no major professional sports teams (Major League Baseball, National Football League, National Basketball Association, National Hockey League, United Bowling League, Major League Soccer, etc.) located in the state, Zeconnemeleth boasts a rich and proud sporting culture that dates to the late 19th century and early 20th century. The state sport of Zeconnemeleth is the triathlon.

FOOTBALL. One of the few things the Foundation State shares in common with the rest of the South is their love of American football, especially on the college level. Two of the college sports world's best known rivalries are Zeconnemeleth Deucalions vs. North Carolina Tar Heels and Zeconnemeleth Deucalions vs. Zeconnemeleth State Schooners, and in a symbolic start to the 2002 Deucalions' football season (the year Zeconnemeleth became the newest state), Zeconnemeleth resoundingly defeated the Tar Heels 63-0. The North Carolina vs. Zeconnemeleth rivalry was political and hotly-contested in the years following the American Civil War, although it has cooled off since the 1910s-1920s and is today a collegiate sports tradition. Although the University of Zeconnemeleth was founded in 1867, it would not field a football team until 1913 amidst concerns over player safety (an issue once addressed by President Theodore Roosevelt, who in 1905 demanded immediate radical reform for the violent sport). The National Football League is also very popular, although it does not have a club in Zeconnemeleth. Commonly followed NFL teams in the state include (but are not limited to) the Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, Hampton Roads Jaguars, Jacksonville Bulls, Tennessee Titans and the Washington Commanders.

BASKETBALL. The Zeconnemeleth-North Carolina college sports rivalry is credited with introducing the sport of basketball to Zeconnemelethians in the 1910s, and this has led to professional basketball and NBA games being highly-watched across the state. While Zeconnemeleth teams generally struggle against North Carolina teams in basketball (especially the Tar Heels and Blue Devils), Deucalions and Schooners fans are nonetheless delighted by the on-court antics of their teams as they cheer them on to victory. Like in North Carolina, many people in Zeconnemeleth find the game of basketball more engaging than the game of football, although football remains as strongly embedded in the state's sporting culture as in the rest of the South. Popular NBA teams in Zeconnemeleth include the Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Bobcats, Memphis Grizzlies, Nashville Kings and the Washington Wizards.

BASEBALL/SOFTBALL. America's national pastime is also one of the more popular sports in the Foundation State. Though it has never been home to a Major League Baseball club, Zeconnemeleth is home to numerous minor league and collegiate summer league teams. Most colleges with athletic programs also field baseball teams, and high school baseball is relatively popular as well. In MLB, Zeconnemeleth is considered a stronghold for the Atlanta Braves. Softball is also a common sport across the state, and there are amateur and minor-league softball teams based in the Qambleyridge/Greater Kanahrahtens and Pritchards Bay regions. Of the collegiate teams, only the Zeconnemeleth Deucalions and Zeconnemeleth State Schooners field women's teams in softball.

SOCCER. For the past couple of decades, soccer has been gaining traction across most of the United States and is starting to finally emerge as one of the more relevant sports in the country, particularly amongst the millennial and Zoomer generations. Most high schools and colleges in Zeconnemeleth have soccer teams, and the most commonly followed Major League Soccer clubs in the state are Atlanta United FC, Charlotte FC and D.C. United.

TRIATHLONS. Triathlons have long been a staple of Zeconnemeleth's sporting culture, dating back to the late 1960s when it was introduced by Europeans (particularly from France). The triathlon quickly gained popularity across the then-territory in the 1970s, taking inspiration from the first modern triathlon in 1974 in San Diego, California, and later by the Hawaii Ironman World Championship that began in 1978. Most triathlon events involve the basic three sports of swimming, cycling and running, including the world-famous Zec-Tathlon, which began in 1976 in Qambleyridge and has gained international recognition, attracting some of the best athletes from all over the world. A couple of triathlon events also involve weight lifting, hiking and sky diving, and some events also borrow from the modern pentathlon (i.e. running and shooting) and the decathlon (i.e. discus throw). The triathlon's long-standing appeal to Zeconnemelethians was recognized in 2012, when the Zeconnemeleth State Legislature officially adopted the triathlon as the state sport.

WATER SPORTS. Swimming, deep sea fishing, sailing, rowing, water skiing, bass fishing, shrimping, boogie boarding and other such activities are also popular in Zeconnemeleth, given that the state is an island. Swimming is the only water sport that most high schools and colleges field teams in, although a few schools also field teams in rowing and fishing.

MOTOR RACING. The Qambleyridge International Speedway hosts NASCAR events, and events such as NHRA drag racing, motocross, off-road motorcycle racing and BMX racing are also very popular across the state. While not as popular as in North Carolina, stock car racing's height of popularity in Zeconnemeleth was in the 1970s and 1980s.

GOLF. Zeconnemeleth is a popular destination for professional and amateur golfers, and the northern regions of the state boast a couple of the nation's best courses. Altogether, there are approximately 45 active golf courses in the state, and driving ranges are also becoming one of the latest sporting trends. Some high school and colleges across the state also field men's and women's teams in golf.

HOCKEY. Ice hockey was introduced to Zeconnemelethians through transplants from Canada and the Northern United States during the early 20th century, however, interest in the sport across Zeconnemeleth would not gain a foothold until the 1980s - which saw the rise of hockey stars such as Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux who made the game much more accessible to Americans. Owing to Zeconnemeleth's warm coastal climate, only a couple of collegiate teams have ice hockey programs (including the Deucalions and Schooners) and compared to more established sports such as football, basketball and baseball, ice hockey is a relative niche in the sporting culture of the state. The most commonly followed NHL teams in Zeconnemeleth are the Atlanta Thrashers, Carolina Hurricanes, Nashville Predators, Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals.

BOXING/WRESTLING. Until the advent of American football, boxing and wrestling were the most popular sports in Zeconnemeleth and the region produced some of the best known boxers of the 1880s-1930s time period, including Micah "Fiery Fisticuffs" Harvard, Vincent "Goliath" Jackson and "Bullet Bruce" Thompson. Today, most high schools and colleges field teams in boxing and wrestling, and the sports of mixed martial arts, karate and jiu-jitsu are also popular recreational sports.

Honorable mentions

- Ten-pin bowling. While the continental United States is home to the United Bowling League (as well as two teams in Canada), bowling's popularity as a sport in America outside of the U.S. state of Altamasstachia is just starting to decline (while continuing to increase in popularity and relevance as the top sport in the Bayflower State) and is most commonly played as a recreational activity. League bowling on the youth, high school, collegiate, amateur and professional level is popular in Zeconnemeleth.

- Volleyball. Volleyball and beach volleyball are popular in the Foundation State, and there are many venues across Zeconnemeleth where the sport is played.

- Roller derby. Roller derby is starting to make a comeback in the United States, and has been trending upwards since the early 2000s.

- Bull riding/rodeo. For a taste of the "Wild West," bull riding and rodeo shows were introduced by people from Texas and Oklahoma in the 1940s and are held in arenas across the state.

- Ultimate disc. A growing sport across the United States since the 1960s, ultimate disc has legions of fans across Zeconnemeleth and there are a couple of professional and amateur organizations dedicated to the sport.
