Balbert is the largest city in Northern Altamasstachia, and is the principal city of the Balbert-Incogniemi metropolitan area. The Balbert-Incogniemi metropolitan area boasts a total population of 500,128 according to the 2021 estimate by the United States Census Bureau, and Balbert is the economic, cultural and demographic center of the Bauryshire region, also known as the Baury.

Balbert was founded in 1822 and began its life as a humble hamlet along the Pacific Ocean, which enabled it to quickly become the most important city in Altamasstachia north of the Clapton Line with industries centered on fishing, lumber, mining and the naval trade. In 1872, a movement to have Bauryshire secede from Altamasstachia and become its own state fomented in the area, with Balbert proposed as a new state capital, citing the great distance between Balbert and the state capital Heston and regional cultural and political differences. However, this movement eventually collapsed in 1874 after an attempt by its leaders to storm a nearby Altamasstachia National Guard armory failed miserably and resulted in the Altamasstachia National Guard putting down all related resistance. The local economy would take a serious blow in the 1900s and 1910s when multiple explosions and landslides rocked the mining industry in Audubon County, which led to major mining reforms throughout the United States. Since the 1980s, the Balbert economy has shifted towards high-tech, aiming to be Altamasstachia's own Silicon Valley with local firms involved in the manufacture of semiconductors, transistors and integrated circuits - though the traditional manufacturing, fishing, natural gas, lumber and mining industries remain integral components of the Balbert metropolitan area economy. The Balbert area is known for its Russian and Scandinavian heritage and their shared culture, cuisine, music and performing arts. Balbert is served by Altamasstachia State Freeway Routes 3, 24 and 124, the Balbert-San Gerardo Bravo Railroad and by Balbert Regional Airport in Aultiphurst. The Balbert metropolitan area is home to the College of the Baury in Balbert (home of the Huskies) and Northern Altamasstachia University in Incogniemi (home of the Owls), and in professional sports, plays host to the Balbert Wolverines of the Altamasstachia Bowling Federation, the Balbert Pioneers of the Altamasstachia Baseball League, the Balbert Maulers of the Altamasstachia All-Pro Football League, the Balbert Muskies of the Altamasstachia Basketball League and the Balbert Blades of the Altamasstachia Hockey League. While quaint and isolated from the rest of the state with the nearest major cities far away, there's a lot to see in Balbert as the area forges ahead with its own identity.
